Government, through the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), has commenced a five-day training for science teachers and laboratory technicians from the Ankole Sub-region to strengthen the practical teaching and learning of science subjects in schools.
The training, which opened on Monday, 7 September 2026, is being held at Mbarara High School in Mbarara City and is organised by the Science and Technology Equipment Production Department (STEPD) of NCDC. STEPD is responsible for the production, servicing and repair of science equipment and apparatus for schools.
The training focuses on key aspects of laboratory management and safety, including personal safety, proper storage, handling, repair and maintenance of science equipment, disposal of laboratory waste, and first aid during emergencies in schools.
The five-day training aims to equip science teachers and laboratory technicians with practical skills for the safe and effective use and management of laboratory equipment. It will also strengthen the capacity of participating schools to provide effective practical learning experiences in science subjects.
Science teachers and laboratory technicians from 50 schools across 12 districts in Ankole Sub-region are participating in the training. Its emphasis is on the importance of strengthening teachers’ and laboratory technicians’ capacity to safely manage and use science equipment as a critical component of effective science education.
The training in Mbarara is part of NCDC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen practical science education across the country. Similar trainings have been conducted in the Northern, Rwenzori, Eastern and Greater Masaka regions over the past two years.
Through such capacity-building initiatives, NCDC continues to support schools with the knowledge and skills required to promote safe, effective and practical teaching and learning of science.
