National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) hosted a delegation from the Tieng Adhola cultural institution, led by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Obbo Richard Josel.
The visiting delegation held a meeting with NCDC management and staff, led by the Deputy Director Research, Consultancy and Library Services, Dr Richard Irumba.
During the meeting, held at the NCDC home in Kyambogo on 5th December, 2024, Rt Hon Josel lauded the Centre for its role in promoting and preserving Dhopadhola language.
NCDC, through the Literature Department, developed readers for learners from P4 to P7, while the Dhopadhola language was introduced at O’level and A’level.
Earlier this year, the Centre embarked on the documentation of folktales of indigenous communities of Uganda, starting with the Jopadhola and Karimojong people.
The interaction with the cultural institution laid strategies for standardising the Dhopadhola orthography and popularisation of Dhopadhola community.
Dr Irumba stressed that local languages were critical in the implementation of the Thematic Curriculum which provides for use of learners’ familiar language as the language of instruction, and preservation of culture.
