National Curriculum Development Centre is finalizing work on Terminology Development Guidelines to facilitate the development of specific terminologies for indigenous languages of Uganda.
The Terminology Handbook contains knowledge frameworks, principles and methods that specialists rely on to develop and standardise terminologies for specific languages.
The guidelines were developed by the Literature Bureau, a department of NCDC responsible for nurturing local authorship and literary production.
On Friday 17th May, 2024, the Centre unveiled the draft Terminology Development Guidelines to stakeholders from different institutions for validation, before they undergo further approvals.
During the workshop, held at NCDC offices in Kyambogo, the Deputy Director for Research, Consultancy and Library Services, Dr Richard Irumba, noted that terminology development guidelines were critical to the teaching and learning of indigenous languages in schools.
“Terminology development is important for this country, given the ongoing education reforms. The Thematic Curriculum emphasizes learning in the local language. Some of these are high level language constructs,’ he stated.
Dr Irumba implored participants to popularize the work of the Literature Bureau in light of its critical role in promoting literacy, inclusive learning and nation-building.
Phillip Oketcho, the Manager Literature Bureau, said the Bureau was ready to steer Uganda’s indigenous languages into the 21st century knowledge era by embracing scientific and technological developments through appropriate terminologies.
