National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), through its Literature Bureau Department, successfully conducted an eight-day orientation of Term Coiners workshop from 7th to 15th September 2025 at Bishop Willis Core PTC in Iganga, Eastern Uganda.
The workshop brought together participants representing Uganda’s five major language groups-Lebacoli, Ateso, Kupsabiny, Runyankore-Rukiga, and Lebjonam–with the primary objective of equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in systematic terminology development. The initiative aims to expand the capacity of Ugandan languages to articulate concepts in modern scientific, technological, and educational contexts.
During the intensive workshop, participants engaged in hands-on sessions on term creation, standardisation, and documentation, guided by experts from NCDC. They also explored strategies for integrating newly coined terms into educational materials and curricula to ensure accessibility and relevance for learners at all levels.
This initiative is a key component of NCDC’s broader mandate to promote the use of local languages in education, preserve Uganda’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage, and empower indigenous languages to thrive in contemporary learning environments. By strengthening terminology development, NCDC continues to support learners, educators, and communities in maintaining cultural identity while fostering scientific literacy and academic excellence.
