NCDC unveils revised curricula for tertiary schools

National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has revised curricula for Community Polytechnics, Technical and Vocational schools in Uganda.

The focus of the new curricula is to enhance demand-driven, skills-based and learner-centred vocational education and training.

The revised curricula were unveiled to key stakeholders at a dissemination workshop held on Thursday September 5, 2024 at Kololo Senior Secondary School in Kampala.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, Members of Parliament, sister agencies, and Principals from different parts of Uganda.

The curricula cover ten National Junior Certificate courses, namely: National Junior Certificate in Building Construction, National Junior Certificate in Plumbing, National Junior Certificate in Welding and Fabrication, National Junior Certificate in Automotive Mechanics, National Junior Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery, National Junior Certificate in Electrical Installation, National Junior Certificate in Agricultural Production, National Junior Certificate in Hotel and Catering Operations, National Junior Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty, and National Junior Certificate in Garment Design and Construction.

Ms Alisat Gule Wabomba, the Manager of the Lifelong Skills and Co-curricular Department at NCDC, said the revised curricula would help students to specialise early and join the world of work.

“The focus of the curricula is to equip trainees with both hands-on skills and soft skills to be able to create and manage their own jobs,” she told participants.
